Don the Verb’s Hanna Astrom and Yanina Landsaat didn’t mandate formal terms for their choice of venue this season, but something bigger than last year’s gallery space was in order. Their requirements (bigger, darker, near their Delancey Street boutique) came through with Thor, the bar at the Rivington Hotel. “The Rivington is actually very pleasant to look at,” Landsaat remarked of the L.E.S. high-rise. “And it’s closer to work,” Astrom chimed in. Thor was indeed well suited to the duo’s latest offering, on view last night. It was a somber, mostly black collection featuring cocoonlike leather shrugs and wraps; it would be easy to read the pieces as emblematic of present-day woes. Landsaat dismissed that. “We hear the term ’survival of the fittest’ over and over again,” she said. “It’s really a matter of creating designer pieces for the long term.” Astrom agrees. “It’s like, don’t panic,” she counsels. “Don’t look at what other people are doing. Stick with what you’re doing and just go forward.”
